Earlier this week, UEFA took time out from its 24/7 money-grab and expanding the Champions League to 197 teams while simultaneously restricting the winners to only Bayern, Juve, Madrid, and Barcelona (and pimp-slapping Man City for its own enjoyment/revenge) to actually make a solid decision. That was to move Euro 2020 to 2021. Some decisions are just so plainly obvious that even an unwieldy and evil organization as this one can’t help but make them. It’s clearly a no-brainer. First, it’s unclear that any kind of sport will be able to be played even in mid-June or early July. Second, the domestic leagues are going to need a lot of room to finish their seasons if they’re allowed, and it most certainly will be when the tournament would have taken place, if not later. Third, this is the unique summer tournament that wasn’t being held in just one country, but in 12 different stadiums across Europe. Which would make it far easier to move back a year as you’re only talking about stadium use for the most part instead of one country’s entire infrastructure for a tournament such as this. No single place is ready to welcome hundreds of thousands of tourists and supporters for up to a month. As stupid and corrupt as the whole Qatar, Thanksgiving-to-Christmas World Cup of 2022 is, even it provides more of a cushion as there isn’t a worry that players will be playing for two straight summers. Though COMNEBOL didn’t seem concerned about that by scheduling back-to-back Copa Americas (for the second time) to get on the same summer tournament schedule as UEFA. They also have pushed back this upcoming Copa America (somehow held in both Colombia and Argentina, which don’t exactly share a border) to 2021. Euro 2020 has been moved to 2021. credits: Getty But from one season to the next, outlooks for national teams can change. Fuck, we don’t even know the total field for Euro 2020 (now 2021) because the playoffs for the last four spots had not been completed yet. It does open up the possibility of currently injured or wayward stars to shine in the tournament that they would have missed this summer, but the reverse is true as well. For instance, Norway is one of those playoff teams, and they’re in possession of maybe the hottest striker on the planet. But will Erling Haaland still be opening up fissures in the time/space continuum in a year? Will a full year in the Bundesliga at 20 char him a bit? Remember, Christian Pulisic lit the world on fire at 18 at Dortmund, but he suffered in form and health at 19 to open a door for Jadon Sancho before moving to Chelsea, where fitness has still evaded him. Time moves quickly for teenagers in football. Tournament favorite France might have gone into this without Paul Pogba, if he even thought the tourney was worth his time, as he would have missed the rest of the season with Manchester United. France also gets a year to find a way to keep Jose Mourinho from attacking Tangay Nnbombele with a mace and find him a happy home. On the flip side, it’s another year of mileage for Antoine Griezmann ( between half-assed LeBron ripoffs), though when you have Kylian Mbappe at the ripe age of 22, no one gives a shit. England will get a reprieve from trying to find a replacement for Harry Kane, though his days of being HARRY KANE are probably over. Still, heading into a tournament where the semis and final will be on home soil and white-knuckling through games with Tammy Abraham, Danny Ings, or Dominic Calvert-Lewin leading the line didn’t seem a tantalizing prospect. Especially with Marcus Rashford having also been very touch-and-go this summer. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will get another season to take an axe to his back. While it’s unlikely that Cristiano Ronaldo will suddenly become useless at 36 when the tournament rolls around, Portugal will get another season to try to buttress around him and his increasingly one-dimensional game On the flip side there, England won’t get Jordan Henderson in player-of-the-season form, though it’s another year for Dean Henderson to displace the sometimes wavy-inflatable-arm-guy ways of Jordan Pickford. Another tournament favorite, Belgium, would have likely entered EU 2020 with captain and best player Eden Hazard on the sidelines, or half-fit at best. Spain will get another year to find an actual forward, though considering they won three major trophies in a row basically without one, maybe it’s not something it has to worry about. Previous World Cup darlings Croatia will have to wonder if it can nurse warhorses Luka Modric, Ivan Perisic, and Ivan Rakitic through another year without needing all the king’s horses and men. While it’s unlikely that Cristiano Ronaldo will suddenly become useless at 36 when the tournament rolls around, Portugal will get another season to try to buttress around him and his increasingly one-dimensional game to defend the trophy with the younger generation like Joao Felix, Goncalo Guedes, Ruben Neves et al. We can still be sure their style will be a violation of the Geneva Convention, which is how they ended up winning the thing in France in the first place. Now that the Netherlands has finally returned to a major tournament, they’ll have to wait a year to see if Virgil van Dijk can return to World Player of The Year finalist form, which he’s fallen from this season, and whether Frankie de Jong and Matthew de Ligt can get back to what made last year’s Ajax so entertaining. Whatever year the tournament is held, Memphis Depay will continue to think he’s four times better than he is, making him the new Nicklas Bendtner. Will Gareth Bale actually be playing somewhere in a year? Will he care? (The answer to both is clearly no.) Obviously, anything can happen in a year’s time. Players in sparkling form now could get hurt or fall off the map or transfer to clubs where they never get off the bench, along with a hundred other possibilities. But it’s always fun to see how much things can shift by changing from one summer to the next. Especially when we don’t have much else to do.

Turkey president Recep Tayyip Erdogan strongly condemned racism after the Champions League clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Istanbul Basaksehir was postponed.
PSG and Turkish visitors Basaksehir will return on Wednesday to complete their match after Tuesday s Group H meeting was halted amid allegations of racism against the fourth official in Paris.
The fixture was stopped after 13 minutes with both sets of players gathering on the sidelines as Basaksehir substitute Demba Ba remonstrated with fourth official Sebastian Coltescu, saying: You never said this white guy . Why, when you mention a black guy, do you have to say this black guy ?
Both PSG and Basaksehir then left the field and play did not resume for over two hours before the match was called off an…
Robert Lewandowski s 199th goal for Bayern Munich was not enough to claim the points as RB Leipzig fought back through Emil Forsberg s penalty to draw 1-1 in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
In their first meeting with Leipzig since a 3-0 DFB-Pokal final win in May, Lewandowski edged closer to a double century of Bayern goals to put Niko Kovac s side ahead.
But, after Bayern had a penalty overturned by VAR, Forsberg levelled matters from 12 yards on the stroke of half-time.
A rejuvenated Leipzig found Manuel Neuer in top form after the restart, though Bayern would have snatched it had Peter Gulacsi not managed to tip Kingsley Coman s deflected effort onto the woodwork as Leipzig held firm to move back into top spot after being briefly replaced by Borussia Dortmu…
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has apologised to Patrice Evra and admitted the club got it massively wrong when they wore t-shirts in support of Luis Suarez following a racism incident between the pair in 2011.
Suarez received an eight game ban after racially abusing the Frenchman in a match between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield in 2011.
In the return match at Old Trafford, Evra refused to shake the Uruguayan’s hand but after the punishment was handed down by the Football Association, Liverpool wore T-shirts in support of Suarez in the warm-up of their Premier League clash with Wigan.
There was no doubt we made a massive mistake, Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, where Evra was also a guest.

Antonio Conte can understand what Tanguy Ndombele is going through after being jeered by Tottenham supporters, but suggested it is down to the midfielder to win them over.
Ndombele incurred the wrath of his own fans after slowly walking off the pitch as Conte made a triple substitution with his side 1-0 down to Morecambe in Sunday s FA Cup third-round tie.
The 25-year-old trudged straight down the tunnel and fresh questions will now be asked of his Spurs career, which has yet to take off since joining from Lyon in July 2019.
Asked at his post-match news conference what he made of the reaction Ndombele received, Conte said: I was just focused on the pitch.

Pep Guardiola thinks Kevin De Bruyne can achieve whatever he wants at Manchester City after committing his long-term future to the Premier League leaders.
De Bruyne penned a two-year extension this week until June 2025 that will take him up to a decade with the club if he sees out the terms.
Since signing for City from Wolfsburg in 2015, the Belgium playmaker has scored 41 goals and supplied 76 assists in 176 Premier League matches.
In terms of creativity, that puts him far above his peers, with ex-Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen (51) the only other player to have laid on more than 50 goals during the same period, with former and current team-mates David Silva (44) and Riyad Mahrez (41) up next.
De Bruyne s 535 chances created since his goalscoring…
Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo says his family are stunned and very angry as he faces a rape allegation.
American Kathryn Mayorga has accused Ronaldo of sexually assaulting her in a hotel in Las Vegas in 2009, something the Portuguese has strenuously refuted.
German publication Der Spiegel first reported the claims, which also included the suggestion Ronaldo paid Ms Mayorga $375,000 in 2010 as part of a privacy agreement, preventing her from going public with the allegations. Ms Mayorga filed a lawsuit in an attempt to quash that agreement while Las Vegas police have re-opened an investigation.
Ronaldo s lawyer Peter Christiansen confirmed the payment was made to Ms Mayorga, but said some documents presented as evidence had been stolen and completely fabrica…
Liverpool end Thuram interest, Lavia talks to begin
Still working to complete their midfield reconstruction, Liverpool have reportedly decided to end their interest in signing OGC Nice s Khephren Thuram. It appears that their acquisition of Dominik Szoboszlai a few days ago played its part in that.
The Merseysiders, however, are said to be set to begin talks with Southampton over the possibility of signing Romeo Lavia, who is a target for Arsenal as well. This summer is probably the last chance Southampton will have to get more than £40 million for the services of the 19-year-old midfield pivot, given the buyback clause Manchester City forced on them when he left the Premier League champions in 2022, which is set at that amount and is valid from the summer o…
Dani Carvajal has sustained a ligament injury in his right knee, Real Madrid have confirmed.
The Spain international has featured in each of the champions first three LaLiga matches this season.
Carvajal played the full 90 minutes in a draw at Real Sociedad and a win at Real Betis, before helping turn the home clash with Real Valladolid in Madrid s favour as a second-half substitute.
But the 28-year-old is now facing a spell on the sidelines and, although his club have not announced a timescale for his ailment, reports suggest he could be out for two months.
Following tests carried out on Dani Carvajal by the Real Madrid medical services, he has been diagnosed with an injury to his medial collateral ligament in his right knee, a statement read.

Ben Chilwell produced a star turn on his Premier League debut for Chelsea as Frank Lampard s side beat Crystal Palace 4-0 on Saturday.
Chilwell marked his 100th appearance in the competition with his fifth goal to break the deadlock early in the second half and crossed for Kurt Zouma to double the lead 66 minutes in.
Palace have already beaten Southampton and Manchester United this season, but a run of five consecutive defeats to Chelsea and just two wins in 11 attempts at Stamford Bridge in the top flight was hardly encouraging pre-game reading.
Indeed, Edouard Mendy making his first league start for the Blues was largely untested in goal as the home side eased to a third win in six games in all competitions this season through a Jorginho penalty double.
Adam Wilson’s late equaliser extended Kevin McDonald’s unbeaten run as Bradford caretaker manager to four games as they snatched a 1-1 draw with Wrexham.
The substitute scored via the underside of the crossbar after 85 minutes to cancel out Paul Mullin’s header.
Former Bradford manager Phil Parkinson returned to the club for only the second time since leaving in May 2016, and his Wrexham side had a good shout for a penalty rejected when Steven Fletcher went down under a challenge from Sam Stubbs.
Mullin then had the best chance of the first half, putting a diving header wide from Ryan Barnett’s cross.
Andy Cook and Emmanuel Osadebe shot straight at visiting goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo as Bradford finally rallied before Fletcher, making his first Wre…
