Ring of Honor’s year-end pay-per-view event, Final Battle, will air live on Friday night from the Hammerstein Ballroom at the Manhattan Center in New York City. It’s become one of the biggest events in independent wrestling, but there’s more intrigue around it than usual this year, as it looks likely that several of ROH’s top stars, including their top draws, could be on their way out of the company after this weekend. They would be Cody Rhodes (who has been working on a handshake deal after his contract expired), The Young Bucks (whose contracts expire this month), and “Hangman” Adam Page (ditto). Along with Marty Scurll (under contract for another year) and Kenny Omega (not a ROH regular, but under contract with sister promotion New Japan Pro Wrestling through January), they…
New Mexico announced on Friday that athletic director Paul Krebs will retire on June 30, ending his 11-year run as head of Lobos athletics. The reason for his sudden departure is not explicitly stated in the school’s official announcement—the press release is merely an extensive list of accomplishments New Mexico athletes, not Krebs, achieved, along with some extremely generous quotes from Lobos officials. That being said, it likely has something to do with the fact that Krebs spent $64,949 in taxpayer money on a 2015 golf trip to Scotland, and then lied about it until KRQE shoved the receipts in his face. The announcement comes two days after state auditor Tim Keller informed interim New Mexico president Chaouki Abdallah that the school’s athletic department will be the focus …
A couple weeks ago, when we were talking about seasonal beers and all the attendant backlashes and forelashes that come with their increasing popularity, commenter Hamilton Porter made the excellent point that some of the exaggerated hand-wringing stems from the odious cultural trend of "basic-shaming."
Let's not dive too deep into that pit of bullshit, but the general premise is that if there's anything worse than being the sort of hipster trash who drinks Pabst Blue Ribbon just because all the rest of the dirty-haired skinny kids do, it's being one of the lame-ass sheeple who need a calendar to figure out how to navigate the beer cooler.
While I can't condone judging anyone's beer choice too harshly on cultural or aesthetic grounds—I'll s…

data-mm-id=”_m6nv89k4g”>Steve Braband spent over a decade behind the scenes at ESPN, and recently became head of digital for DAZN in the United States and Canada. The Big Lead asked him questions that covered topics including his background, goals for the future, and TikTok.Ryan Glasspiegel: What made you decide to leave ESPN after 12 years for DAZN?Steve Braband: First and foremost, I never thought I’d leave ESPN. It’s an amazing place to work.In March, I ran into Jamie Horowitz and his 10-year-old son in Los Angeles at a Lakers game (not trying to sound super Hollywood, but true story!) and we quickly made plans to meet up and catch up. My wife Ashley and I know Jamie very well – he attended our wedding! – and we had both worked with Jamie at ESPN; she worked in production …
data-mm-id=”_9gbpiyr2t”>Season records: Koster 72-63; Giuffra 69-57; McKeone 64-71; Phillips 62-73Utah (-6) vs. OregonKoster: Justin Herbert was a shell of himself against Arizona State a few weeks ago and the Ducks lost hope of a national title as a result. The Utes' defense is far superior to that Sun Devils' side, and may be the best in all of the country. I like Utah to do what needs to be done and be impressive in its last audition for the selection committee. Utah 33, Oregon 17McKeone: I've cooled significantly on Justin Herbert as the season has progressed. He's still a quality QB prospect, but doesn't have the skills right now to solely drive his team to victory– and that's what Oregon needs to overcome one of the best defenses around in Utah. I d…
data-mm-id=”_b7637ml8n”>It hasn't been the smoothest transition from Yahoo! to ESPN for NFL reporter Kimberley Martin. The week she started, the sports world shut down because of coronavirus. Despite that hiccup, Martin has already produced some outstanding work both on- and off-camera, including a powerful column about Drew Brees' apology.Martin joined In My Bag to discuss that transition, where she'll be featured on ESPN during the NFL season, what players are saying about Ezekiel Elliott's positive COVID test being leaked, why teams being interested in Colin Kaepernick now seems like more of a PR play and more. Full video below with links to specific segments below. Enjoy! Transition to ESPN during the pandemic (0:45) Where Martin will be featured on ESPN during …
data-mm-id=”_9kouubeks”>Everyone knows that Don Larsen twirled a perfect game in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series. What very few, including myself, knew before last night is that the legendary performance was aided by a decision to remove the batter's eye in centerfield. Eagle-eyed Keith Olbermann brought this to the world's attention with the help of some archival footage airing on MLB Network. This amazing truth -that the true stunner was not that the Dodgers got no hits but that the Yankees got five, or ANY- is backed up by two photos from the collection of photos I obtained from the widow of a fan who attended. This is pre-game. This is where the Batters’ Eye WASN’T pic.twitter.com/2VUqrMKBSP— Keith Olbermann (@KeithOlbermann) May 13, 2020That certainly changes the c…

data-mm-id=”_a01t1riru”>There's been renewed conversation about Colin Kaepernick being signed by an NFL team following the country and the NFL's racial-injustice awakening. That's a good thing. Kaepernick was seemingly blackballed by NFL teams after he tried to raise awareness about police brutality against minorities and racial inequality by kneeling during the national anthem. He deserves a second chance if he wants one. Some team should give it to him. While that is true, it's also true that Cam Newton is still a free agent and is, by a wide margin, the better quarterback of the two. That's not a knock on Kaepernick, it's just reality. Newton has played in the NFL more recently and at a higher level than Kaepernick ever did. If an NFL team is looking fo…
