data-mm-id=”_k082qhl8p”>Sunday evening's postseason rematch between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills was highly anticipated by both the hardcore sports fans and casual fans alike. One does not need to watch First Take to understand the major players and what was at stake. Patrick Mahomes vs. Josh Allen with a trip to the AFC Championship on the line is simple and intriguing, and these teams have a track record of playing competitive, close games. This year had an extra Taylor Swift element, too. People were always going to watch in large quantities. Then Mahomes and Allen delivered another incredible game that came down to the wire and ended in heartbreak for Buffalo (again). All that drove absolutely massive viewership numbers. CBS announced on Tuesday that over 50 million people tuned in to watch, numbers nigh unheard-of (even for the NFL, which is king) outside of Super Bowls. The @NFLonCBS scores the most-watched NFL Divisional Playoff Game ever as Chiefs-Bills is the first to surpass 50 million viewers (50.393).Sunday’s game peaked with more than 56 million viewers (56.250).More info here: https://t.co/cVrPE0x1Tq pic.twitter.com/1qdlSDDss7— CBS Sports PR (@CBSSportsGang) January 23, 2024Just absolutely gigantic numbers. As noted by CBS it's a 10 percent increase over last year's window, which featured the longtime ratings giant Dallas Cowboys. It's legitimately impressive that CBS was able to pull this off, even for a big playoff game; numbers north of 50 million viewers are always reserved for either the Championship Game or the Super Bowl. That's the biggest takeaway. These are stupidly big numbers. The other takeaway involves Mahomes. His track record in the viewership department has always been stellar. He started his career as a must-watch superstar and has only gotten better. He is box office, as Stephen A. Smith likes to say, and one of the few athletes who people shift their schedule around to watch. It's been like that for a few years now. But now that Mahomes is setting records, it feels appropriate to draw a parallel to his only modern NFL viewership equivalent– Tom Brady. There's a lot that goes into viewership for an NFL game, like the quality of the teams and the stakes. But the superstars are what drive the biggest numbers, and there was no bigger superstar than Tom Brady. Brady's opening night with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and his return to New England are two of the five highest-rated regular season games in football history. His impact obviously extends to the postseason; the last time Brady was in a Championship Game, he helped drive 46 million viewers for Packers-Bucs. His final AFCCG as a Patriot was in 2019 and 53 million people tuned in to watch. Networks were always thrilled when they got Brady for any game, but especially in the playoffs. Mahomes is that guy now. A mere divisional round game broke the 50-million viewer mark and the peak of 56 million was more than the Chiefs-Patriots Championship Game five years ago. You cannot solely attribute it to Mahomes but you can successfully argue that there is a big bump thanks to his participation, which is a status very, very few players are capable of reaching. Brady might be gone but we've known Mahomes was his heir apparent for years. Now it's true even in the viewership realm. Mahomes is the new Brady and networks will continue to fight tooth and nail for the right to broadcast his games.

Liverpool end Thuram interest, Lavia talks to begin
Still working to complete their midfield reconstruction, Liverpool have reportedly decided to end their interest in signing OGC Nice s Khephren Thuram. It appears that their acquisition of Dominik Szoboszlai a few days ago played its part in that.
The Merseysiders, however, are said to be set to begin talks with Southampton over the possibility of signing Romeo Lavia, who is a target for Arsenal as well. This summer is probably the last chance Southampton will have to get more than £40 million for the services of the 19-year-old midfield pivot, given the buyback clause Manchester City forced on them when he left the Premier League champions in 2022, which is set at that amount and is valid from the summer o…
Dani Carvajal has sustained a ligament injury in his right knee, Real Madrid have confirmed.
The Spain international has featured in each of the champions first three LaLiga matches this season.
Carvajal played the full 90 minutes in a draw at Real Sociedad and a win at Real Betis, before helping turn the home clash with Real Valladolid in Madrid s favour as a second-half substitute.
But the 28-year-old is now facing a spell on the sidelines and, although his club have not announced a timescale for his ailment, reports suggest he could be out for two months.
Following tests carried out on Dani Carvajal by the Real Madrid medical services, he has been diagnosed with an injury to his medial collateral ligament in his right knee, a statement read.

Ben Chilwell produced a star turn on his Premier League debut for Chelsea as Frank Lampard s side beat Crystal Palace 4-0 on Saturday.
Chilwell marked his 100th appearance in the competition with his fifth goal to break the deadlock early in the second half and crossed for Kurt Zouma to double the lead 66 minutes in.
Palace have already beaten Southampton and Manchester United this season, but a run of five consecutive defeats to Chelsea and just two wins in 11 attempts at Stamford Bridge in the top flight was hardly encouraging pre-game reading.
Indeed, Edouard Mendy making his first league start for the Blues was largely untested in goal as the home side eased to a third win in six games in all competitions this season through a Jorginho penalty double.
Adam Wilson’s late equaliser extended Kevin McDonald’s unbeaten run as Bradford caretaker manager to four games as they snatched a 1-1 draw with Wrexham.
The substitute scored via the underside of the crossbar after 85 minutes to cancel out Paul Mullin’s header.
Former Bradford manager Phil Parkinson returned to the club for only the second time since leaving in May 2016, and his Wrexham side had a good shout for a penalty rejected when Steven Fletcher went down under a challenge from Sam Stubbs.
Mullin then had the best chance of the first half, putting a diving header wide from Ryan Barnett’s cross.
Andy Cook and Emmanuel Osadebe shot straight at visiting goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo as Bradford finally rallied before Fletcher, making his first Wre…
Arsenal are interested in signing James Maddison from Leicester City, according to .
Maddison is a product of the youth setup at Coventry, having gone through the ranks there and earned first-team promotion in 2014. He joined Norwich City in January 2016 but returned to Coventry on loan for the rest of that season, and he spent the first half of the following one on loan with Aberdeen. His stock grew in pace with his fine performances for the Canaries, and he quickly became a player in much demand. In 2018, he joined Leicester for a reported fee of just over £20 million.

Liverpool on track for worst defence ever as Grealish follows in foul footsteps – the Premier League
Another spectacular weekend in the Premier League always looked likely after Liverpool s thriller at Everton, and we weren t disappointed.
The champions lost Virgil van Dijk to injury and a winning goal to a Sadio Mane offside so marginal it seems VAR has now started dealing with measurements on the Planck scale.
Gareth Bale s return to action for Tottenham was warmly welcomed (mostly by jubilant West Ham fans) as a Jose Mourinho team once more produced a goal-fest, a sure sign that 2020 is truly losing its marbles.
Thankfully, we were also given a healthy dose of normality. Arsenal lost to Manchester City for the seventh time in a row, Jack Grealish was fouled so much you have to wonder if his tiny shin pads are shouting insults at every opponent, and Crystal Pa…
Chelsea are interested in signing Antonio Silva from Benfica in the summer transfer window, according to . The report has claimed that Chelsea will send scouts to watch Silva in action for Benfica against Sporting Lisbon in the semi-finals of the Taca de Portugal this week.
Silva is one of the best young defenders in Europe and has been on the books of Benfica since 2016. He has come through the youth system and is now part of the first team. The 20-year-old Portugal international centre-back has scored two goals in 21 Portuguese league appearances this season.

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri has urged Toffees fans to “bear with us” as the protracted sale of the club enters “the home straight”.
The Toffees’ Fan Advisory Board (FAB) wrote to Moshiri, prospective owners 777 Partners and the Premier League this week seeking answers, with the takeover appearing to have stalled since it was first agreed last September.
Fans also asked for clarification on what would happen if the deal does not proceed, but Moshiri and 777 have replied to assure them the takeover will go ahead and that the delay was down to the Premier League’s “approval process”.

Premier League clubs have voted in favour of the competition potentially creating a spending cap, according to widespread reports.
The Premier League will now work on the studies and legal analysis required to possibly introduce a cap model from the start of the 2025-26 season onwards.
This would replace the current Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), under which Everton and Nottingham Forest have both been deducted points this season, while Leicester City have been charged with a breach.
At a meeting on Monday, 16 clubs voted in favour of the Premier League performing the required analysis. The model will then be presented to club s at the annual general meeting in June, for another vote.

Josh Sheehan is determined to revive his Wales career after injury destroyed his World Cup dream and provoked the “dark days” that followed.
Bolton midfielder Sheehan won his fourth Wales cap – and his first for two years – by coming on as a second-half substitute in the 0-0 friendly draw with South Korea on Thursday.
It was reward for a tough journey that began on November 17, 2021 – a date inked in Sheehan’s mind.
